We catch up with Susan Ingle, Director of Inglish Design Harrogate, to talk dream kitchens, made to meaure furniture, interior design and how she can make your house a home

Susan Ingle and her husband Graham started up their bespoke furniture and kitchen company in Yorkshire six years ago off the back of 20 years experience within the interiors and furniture trade. Since then, Inglish Designs Ltd, located in Knaresborough near Harrogate, has grown and grown and they are forever exploring ways to expand the already thriving business.
Inglish Design can make your dream kitchen, bathroom or bedroom a reality with a made-to-order service, taking into account your every requirement and desire.
Despite being busy designing the furniture and interiors for clients, marketing the brand and keeping up with new demands, design director Susan is enjoying every minute of it.
What makes Inglish Designs Ltd different to other similar businesses?
We have the luxury of designing and manufacturing from the same premises, so this means we can keep control of quality and design from start to completion. Our clients can visit and see their kitchen or furniture in production at any stage, and our showroom shows a good range of what we can do. There are not many truly bespoke kitchen and furniture manufacturers, and I believe we are unique in our diversity, and most of all our quality and integrity.
What speciality products do you offer?
We have recently introduced some coloured leathers for use either on shelving inside cabinets or in door panels, as well as a range of bespoke sofas and rugs. This will enable us to be more specialist and provide tailor-made solutions in these areas. We have also recently introduced new finishes for our kitchen. So as well as Handpainted kitchens we can now offer kitchens with oak doors but colour washing, which gives a brilliant effect. We’ve just completed a contemporary kitchen in Harrogate using this finish and the result is brilliant – and quite unique to Inglish Design.
Do you think there is a competitive market for bespoke furniture and interiors?
I believe that people are now becoming more educated about kitchens, furniture and interiors, and are keen to show more of their own personality in their home. A good quality piece of furniture, which they have had input into designing, will be something which they have for many years, and won’t see anywhere else. Also, people realise the advantage of installing good quality fixtures and fittings in their homes in order to increase the value and help sell their home. So a well designed, stylish kitchen which includes the latest appliances, and clever storage can not only look fantastic but give your home the edge in terms of value and ability to sell. Mass produced kitchens are everywhere, but good quality bespoke kitchens not only looks the part but also has longevity. This is the same for all rooms in the home, and we are proud that we have the ability and design flair to produce high quality solutions for any interior space.
Have you always been interested in design and interiors?
Yes, I’m very creative so always sketching, painting and designing furniture, and have also a keen eye for colour and texture. I studied Interior Design at University in Edinburgh and when I left, I started doing small interior projects. I have been very lucky that my career path has led me through a variety of projects completing both residential and commercial work. I have worked at managerial level for various bespoke kitchen and furniture manufacturers, and also worked as an interior designer on a wide range of projects. It’s a great industry to work in as trends are constantly changing, and new materials evolving. Every client we work for has different requirements so it means all projects bring new challenges. We are very lucky to work with great clients who have fantastic houses, which makes life very enjoyable !
What would you say is your favourite interior style?
I like simple modern design with clean lines, and classic colours with detail and texture added via fabrics and wall coverings. I am also a huge fan of any design which is practical and functional as well as looking good. So there is quite a criteria when designing for myself!
What’s the quirkiest piece of furniture you’ve produced?
I think the most unusual pieces recently have been those using special veneers and metal effect laminates. We have also done a range of furniture for a client using snakeskin panels within a Zebrano-style veneer – they were very much statement pieces, and looked fabulous in the client’s home.
What does the future hold for Inglish Designs Ltd?
We have a few exciting things in the pipeline for 2012/13. We are always working on interesting projects, from kitchens to bedrooms, home cinema spaces to studies, and often home bar areas. We are working alongside various companies in Harrogate and North Yorkshire to provide the very best bespoke service available. This year this will include even more full house/apartments, which is fantastic. We also plan to increase our product portfolio for the interiors side of the business. So watch this space!
