Interview with Susan Maxwell – Founder, Designer & Creative Director of Inglish Design

“The Yorkshire Designer” on luxury interiors, craftsmanship, and creating timeless homes

Susan Maxwell is a renowned interior designer and the Founder and Director of Inglish Design, a luxury bespoke interiors company based near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Established in 2007, Inglish Design is celebrated for its craftsmanship, timeless sophistication, and meticulous attention to detail, delivering high-end bespoke kitchens, fitted bedrooms, bookcases, studies, custom furniture, and full interior design services.

Often referred to as “The Yorkshire Designer,” Susan has worked across residential, commercial, and high-end hospitality projects, leading her team to create beautifully tailored interiors that reflect each client’s lifestyle and personality. With several Awards and Accolades achieved over the last 19 years.

We sat down with Susan to talk about her journey, her design philosophy, and what inspires her work.

Q&A with Susan Maxwell

Q: Susan, can you tell us a little about your background and how Inglish Design began?

Susan: I have a BA (Hons) in Interior Design and have worked in the interiors industry for many years. After gaining experience across different areas of design, I founded Inglish Design in 2007 with the aim of creating a studio that truly focused on bespoke, high-quality interiors. I wanted to offer clients something more personal — beautifully crafted spaces that feel timeless, not trend-driven. My main aim is proving the very best design, quality and service. Our clients are at the heart of everything we create, and its about providing them with the very best end result.

Q: How would you describe Inglish Design and what makes it unique?

Susan: Inglish Design is all about craftsmanship, detail, and individuality. We design and create luxury bespoke kitchens, fitted bedrooms, studies, bookcases, media walls, and custom furniture, as well as providing full interior design services.
What really sets us apart is the level of personal service and the way we tailor every project around how our clients live. Our showroom allows clients to experience the quality of our work, and our manufacturing in the same premises in Knaresborough means we maintain close control over craftsmanship and finishes. The same team that make any of our  kitchens or furniture will install it as well – so we can closely follow every job from start to completion.

Q: You have worked across residential, commercial, and hospitality projects. How does that influence your designs?

Susan: Working across different sectors keeps things exciting and constantly evolving. Residential projects allow us to build very personal relationships with clients and design homes that truly support their lifestyle. This is my favourite sector. However, my past experience in commercial and hospitality projects bring another layer — they demanded strong visual identity, durability, and functionality, often on a larger scale. Each sector influences the other, and that crossover often leads to more innovative and well-rounded design solutions. I think that this experience allows me to see all projects at a detailed level. Its also been great in understanding how to work with projects and teams at all levels. Exceptional design begins with exceptional listening.  Our clients define the brief; then we perfect the detail.

Q: You’re often called “The Yorkshire Designer.” What does that mean to you?

Susan: I’m very proud to be based in Yorkshire. The region has an incredible appreciation for quality, heritage, and craftsmanship, and that really aligns with how we work. Being “The Yorkshire Designer” reflects not just where we’re based, but our values — honesty, attention to detail, and creating interiors that stand the test of time.  Having lived and worked in Yorkshire as an interior designer for 30 years it seemed like an appropriate name all round !

Q: What is your design philosophy?

Susan: My philosophy is that great design should be both beautiful and functional. A space has to work effortlessly for the people who use it every day. We focus on proportion, flow, and fine detail, always aiming for a look that feels sophisticated, warm, and enduring.
Trends can be inspiring, but I believe in designing interiors that clients will love for many years, not just a season. And so to that  end craftsmanship and quality is never compromised, but neither is creativity.

Q: What do you enjoy most about running Inglish Design?

Susan: Seeing a project come to life from the very first conversation to the final installation is incredibly rewarding. I love collaborating with clients, understanding how they want to live, and translating that into a physical space. Leading a creative team and watching them grow, innovate, and produce such beautiful work is also a huge source of pride. Few companies both design and manufacture under one roof — a distinction that defines Inglish Design. Our clients can see things in production. They can meet the team who will make and install their commission. Our Cabinetmakers are in the workshop and also  in clients homes – so for them this is also hugely rewarding.
