Our Harrogate Kitchen Showroom provides you with beautiful examples of our superb quality handmade kitchens. For many people, the lock downs of the previous years highlighted the importance of having a good working kitchen. Eating, Cooking, Baking and Dining suddenly became more important when we were all stuck indoors. A new kitchen is a great investment for any home. As well as wanting it to look great, it takes careful planning. It takes serious thinking about your current kitchen, and how it works or does not as the case may be! The kitchen is the hub of the home. Many Inglish Design kitchens are muti purpose rooms. In the Harrogate homes we work on, if you are lucky enough to have the space, the kitchen will provide the place to cook, dine, relax and also entertain. The kitchen can be one of the most expensive spaces in your home to renovate. However, a well-planned kitchen not only make it an enjoyable space to use, but it will in turn help to sell your home should you put in on the market. In general, with a new kitchen, you get what you pay for. Of key importance is cabinet build and materials, as these are the aspects which need to provide longevity. Here is a guide to planning your kitchen so you can create the very best kitchen design. It will hopefully also make the process easier and less stressful for you!
Building Work
You may be building an extension or simply removing an old kitchen and redesigning the space. It is likely that you will need a builder. Often 40-50 per cent of your budget will go on building and labour costs. Being realistic about affordability at the outset, you will avoid costly mistakes (not to mention disappointment) later on. By employing a builder this often means that the building, plumbing, electrical, tiling and decorative work will be provided under the one umbrella. This is useful in terms of managing the project. Your builder effectively controls the project roll out for you. Some kitchens companies will offer all trades as part of their kitchen supply, however, beware of this. In general, when a kitchen company does this, the trades will not be directly employed by them. This means you are at the mercy of sub-contractors. These may be self-employed and therefore with other jobs to work on as well as yours. This can cause problems with reliability and control.
Planning your kitchen Project
Of key importance when planning a new kitchen is to meet with the builder your kitchen design and explain in place what is required. Always get a written quote from your builder, and always follow any meetings up with an email which confirms in writing what you have discussed. Decide on a date which he can work to. Establish a completion date and work back from this realistically with the time he suggests is required to undertake the works. You should always allow at least one extra week than your builder suggests. Most times this week will be absorbed by something, whether this be a supplier issue or an installation issue. A spreadsheet is an ideal way to block in each week and understand what will be happening and who will be due to do it. If you can its often good to take some time away whilst you are without a working kitchen. If you do this make sure there is someone managing the project in your absence. At Inglish Design we can offer project management services. To an extent we do this as part of your kitchen order. It is in our interest to make sure your property is ready for the installation date that we have given you. Allow within your budget for a contingency fund, as big builds tend to include unforeseen spends. Try not to get in a situation with any supplier where they provide you with only estimated costs, as additional charges can escalate out of control, and you may also be taken advantage of. Try to understand lead times for any goods that need purchased. In particular new windows and doors need to be ordered ASAP as these are often the items that delay projects. Similarly, if you are ordering flooring get this ordered as soon as you can. Appliances have been subject to long delays recently and can also cause issues. At Inglish Design we like to order your kitchen appliances as soon as possible so that we can check them as soon as possible.
Choosing a kitchen company, a good way to do this is through referral. Has a friend or relative used a company whom they can recommend. Don’t be swept away by glossy adverts for kitchen companies, do your research. Visit local showroom and ask for an indication of cost. “Off the shelf” kitchens are the cheapest option, but not as cheap as you may think – and ultimately, they might not make as good use of space as a bespoke kitchen – and probably not the same wow factor either. The quality of the kitchen cabinets is key. Look at the drawers and how they are made, find out about how the kitchen is manufactured and what materials are used. Remember, things like appliances have a lifespan, whereas your kitchen cabinets should last for many years, so it is worth investing in kitchen cabinets which are robust, will give you durability and longevity. At Inglish Design we don’t advertise. All of our work comes via referral, or via our website. We have a brilliant reputation in Harrogate and North Yorkshire for what we do.
Kitchen Design
Get a kitchen designer involved as soon as possible. The perfect design may take a couple of redraws in order to provide you with something that is really special. One of the best preparatory tasks you can undertake before you plan your project is to make a brief of what you want and what you would like. Check of all your kitchen appliances, how old are they and do they need replacing. Look at the storage space you have now, and the storage space you actually need. This may mean getting rid of things you never use, or it may mean making sure that the new kitchen design has extra drawers and cabinets to allow things to be more organised. Think about how you will use the space, where you will store food. How much fridge and freezer space you need is key. Do you need an oven and a microwave, or would you prefer a range cooker? What do you find frustrating about your current or previous kitchen? Would you like seating built into your kitchen or a dining area? Remember this is YOUR kitchen – don’t be talked into a design that you are not comfortable with, or that you don’t fell meets your brief. Many kitchen companies will simply try and cram as many cabinets as they can into your space. The benefit of a bespoke kitchen is that you can use the space wisely. You won’t be restricted to cabinet sizes that are off the shelf, and you can integrate anything you like inside the cabinets as well. At Inglish design we discuss every single cabinet and what it will provide you with. Our work ethic has never been based on pushy sales tactics. Indeed, we can do as much or as little as you want. We have occasionally done kitchen renovations where we use existing cabinets, or simply add an area to an existing kitchen.
Kitchen Appliances
Sinks and Taps
The items that you touch and use on a daily basis need to be good quality and able to withstand years of wear and tear. A high-quality tap that will stay the course and a sink that is the right size and well-made is money well spent. Boiling hot water taps used to be luxury item in a kitchen, and in the same vein the first thing to be removed when on a tight budget. Nowadays virtually every Inglish Design kitchen includes one. Getting the right size of sink is crucial. this will depend on the space available and also your personal preference. You should consider the workspace and if you need a second sink or prep sink.
Worktops
It’s always a good rule of thumb to invest in good quality work surfaces. There is a vast choice of worktops available from natural stone to quartz and even ceramic. Most of the time your choice will be based on colour and aesthetics, but make sure you understand what the worktops are made of and what warranty they come with. Matching splash backs are a good way to provide a durable surface to the rear of cooking areas that can be wiped clean. In larger kitchens you may consider using different materials for different areas of worksurfaces. An island may look great in a different colour of surface and break things up if you select something different to the rest of the cabinets.
Lighting & Electrics
Your kitchen is one of the most used spaces in your home, and the lighting can really make a difference to how it feels. Think about adding different types of lighting, for task and for aesthetics. You can use task lighting under the wall units, and well position ceiling lights around your work area. Then overhead or pendant fittings to create atmosphere over islands or dining areas. Try to find a little give in your budget to accommodate great-quality, statement light fittings, such as a beautiful pendant. Plan your lighting as soon as you have decided on the layout of your kitchen, it will be time and money well spent. Lighting is not a finishing touch; it needs to be considered from the outset. If you are building a new home or a large kitchen extension, we would advise using a lighting specialist. In terms of electrics, we will advise on what we need for your kitchen appliance to function. We supply full electrical and plumbing drawings with every kitchen. However, you must decide where you want wall sockets, or supplies for any other electrical items.
Flooring
Procurement
Finally, try to buy your flooring through your builder if he has a trade account, or negotiate a discount with the supplier. Be aware that if you are ordering porcelain, many if the large factories in Spain and Italy close for one month in the summer, normally August. Ordering in good advance is suggested to avoid any delays. If you are ordering yourself beware of online companies. If there is a problem with quality, batch or quantity it is much harder to resolve this online. If you can find a local supplier any issues will be easier to sort out.
Electric or piped underfloor heating
Management
Projects that start without a clear plan or deviate from the plan as it progresses end up in stress, mess, overspending and never ending. Do you have a temporary kitchen or utility room which you can use? Do you have somewhere to store your kitchen goods? If you are building an extension can this be done with minimum disruption and dust to the rest of the house? How will you dispose of the old kitchen and appliances? These are big questions which are often overlooked. Building work of any type creates lots of dust, mess and noise. If you are organised for this then things will be less stressful. Plan everything well from timescale, to suppliers, materials to budget, and plan how you will live while the work is being done. This way you will achieve your goals and end up with the very best end result. A new kitchen is a fantastic addition to any home, it’s worth the money and the effort and worth planning well. Inglish Design can help and give advice on everything you need.
