So with a passion for excellent design, we have been keeping an eye on what is on trend for interiors in 2013. We expect these trends to influence our bespoke furniture and design. So if you are building or renovating your Harrogate property, or planning work on your Yorkshire home, spend a few minutes reading our blog about 2013 trends.

For anyone looking for the next big thing in the worlds of interiors the exhibitors at the Parisian Maison & Objet, can give you a glimpse of what’s hot or not right now. The fair is the first and biggest design trade show of the year, which means that this is the place to spot new patterns, colours and styles. For the spring collection, however, there weren’t any shocking revelations, instead, pastels dominated and taking the lead from natural and vintage sources seemed to continue.

Cast yourself back to our article “50 shades of Gray”, which discussed the trend towards hand painted furniture and hand painted kitchens, using grays as the basis for all shades of paint colours. The show also highlighted the use of 1950’s pastel colours which stood out in wall coverings, home accessories and furniture. The softest marshmallow hues, are still be paired with grays and natural timbers. Chalky whites and soft clays alongside this look is certainly an interior style which Inglish Design expect to dominate 2013. the simplicity of Scandinavian design alongside these tones create the perfect combination. So for kitchens and furniture we expect to be manufacturing a lot of hand painted finishes and natural woods and timbers in Maple, Oak and Walnut. Walnut kitchens will continue in popularity, particularly those in dark stained finishes, alongside pure white and pastel grays. The vintage industrial style kitchens we have spoken about in previous blogs continues as a key look. Hand painted bedroom furniture, and living room furniture such as bookcases will also favour hand painted finishes in timeless chalky shades.

Kitchens still favour minimal looks however the plain shaker door continues to dominate, now being set in plain frames, with wide drawers chosen rather than cupboards. The cup handle is back and set to stay ! – yet not in the traditional style pewter finish of 10 years ago – polished chrome has been easing its way back into kitchen and interiors for the last few years, and is now comfortably sat at the height of fashion ! In 2013, polished chrome handles have a certain weight, style and quality which far removes them from the stereotypical tacky polished chrome accessories we have been used to previously. Worktops favour lighter colours such as marble and pale stone, doing away with the trend for black granite. The overall look for 2013 interiors is softer and more gentle, natural and simple. Being huge fans of interior designer Kelly Hoppen, Inglish Design were interested to read her comments on 2013 design trends she say “Perhaps as a throw back from the recession, which continues to hold a grip on most countries, consumers are looking for long lasting design that will stand the test of time. People want simplicity but it has to be feel individual and personal to them. There will be an even bigger emphasis on softer lines, muted colours and vintage furniture.”

Interior Design will see wall coverings favour animal shapes, animal skins effect and botanical designs. Baroque style papers will remain in fashion, but perhaps not in as bold colour and texture as previous years – instead they will include metallic and faded properties. Metallic papers with shimmer and reflection make the perfect feature, and simple linen effect wallpapers are also high on the list of hot trends for 2013. Natural wools, knitted and woven textiles will embrace the vintage palette, with the occasional depth of colour added via accent pieces – but nothing stepping to far out of the comfort zone ! Retro and classic design, compliments the vintage concept. Iconic pieces added to muted interiors provide a statement in their own right – there is no need for complication.

However – don’t be to disappointed by the wash of pastel that 2013 presents us with – as combined with these there is also a trend for adding a little bit of ooh la la back into your home. Acidic and mustard yellow, cerise pinks ,earthy oranges, and zingy lime, or for the less adventures there are deep aubergines, navy and teal blue. Furniture will retain simplicity and form, however the trend towards Baroque with its exuberant style, and feeling of luxury and opulence will remain. Horrah !! Feature consoles and statement furniture will remain, and alongside these large ornate mirrors and lamps. Dark timbers will dominate, with walnut furniture, dark stained furniture and high gloss black furniture making their presence felt in many interior schemes. Indulgent interiors of dark coffee shades, taupes and perhaps even a sprinkle of copper metallic tones will allow a necessary breather from the vintage pastel shades.

If you need interior design services, or perhaps are considering a new kitchen, or new furniture, contact Inglish Design. We provide a first consultation free of charge.
