Kitchen design advice from experts Inglish Design of Harrogate

The kitchen can be one of the most expensive spaces in your home to renovate. A well planned kitchen not only make it an enjoyable space to use, but it will in turn help to sell your home should you put in on the market. Generally with kitchens you get what you pay for. Of key importance is cabinet build and materials, as these are the aspects which need to provide longevity. Here is a guide to planning your kitchen so you can create the very best kitchen design, and make the process easier and less stressful !

Building Work

If you are building an extension or simply removing an old kitchen and redesigning the space, it is likely that you will need a builder. Often 40-50 per cent of your budget will go on building and labour costs. By being realistic about affordability at the outset, you will avoid costly mistakes (not to mention disappointment) later on. By employing a builder this often means that the building, plumbing, electrical, tiling and decorative work will be provided under the one umbrella. This is useful in terms of managing the project, as you builder effectively controls the project roll out for you. Some kitchens companies will offer all trades as part of their kitchen supply, however beware of this. In general when a kitchen company does this, the trades will not be directly employed by them, so you are at the mercy of sub contractors who are generally self employed with other jobs to work on as well as yours. This can cause problems with reliability and control.

Of key importance when planning a new kitchen is to meet with the builder and explain with the kitchen design in place what is required. Always get a written quote from your builder, and always follow any meetings up with an email which confirms in writing what you have discussed. Decide on a date which he can work to. Establish a completion date and work back from this realistically with the time he suggests is required to undertake the works. Always allow at lease one extra week than your builder suggest – 9/10 times this week will be absorbed by something, whether this be a supplier issue or an installation issue. A spreadsheet is an ideal way to block in each week and understand what will be happening and who will be due to do it.

Allow within your budget for a contingency fund, as big builds tend to include unforeseen spends. Try not to get in a situation with any supplier where they provide you with only estimated costs, as additional charges can escalate out of control, and you may also be taken advantage of.

Choosing a kitchen company

A good way to do this is through referral. Has a friend or relative used a company whom they can recommend. Don’t be swept away by glossy adverts for kitchen companies, do your research. Visit local showroom and ask for an indication of cost. “off the shelf” kitchens are the cheapest option, but not as cheap as you may think – and ultimately they might not make as good use of space as a bespoke kitchen – and probably not the same wow factor either. The quality of the kitchen cabinets is key. Look at the drawers and how they are made, find out about how the kitchen is manufactured and what materials are used. Remember, things like appliances have a lifespan, whereas your kitchen cabinets should last for many years, so it is worth investing in kitchen cabinets which are robust, will give you durability and longevity.

Planning the kitchen cabinets and kitchen design

Get a kitchen designer involved as soon as possible. The perfect design may take a couple of redraws in order to provide you with something that is really special. One of the best preparatory tasks you can undertake before you plan your project is to make an audit of all your kitchen goods. Look at the storage space you have now, and the storage space you actually need. This may mean getting rid of things you never use, or it may mean making sure that the new kitchen design has extra drawers and cabinets to allow things to be more organised. Think about how you will use the space, where you will store food. How much fridge and freezer space you need is key. Do you need an oven and a microwave, or would you prefer a range cooker ? What do you find frustrating about your current or previous kitchens ? Would you like seating built into your kitchen or a dining area ?

Kitchen Appliances

The appliances you choose for your kitchen can have a massive impact on your overall budget. For example a fridge can be £300 or it can be anything up to £20,000. Equally adding in all sorts of extra cooking gadgets can soon stretch the budget to the limit. Think about what you need, then think of any extra appliances you may like. Look at different brands of appliances. You cannot compare a Hotpoint fridge to a Sub Zero fridge – you need to establish what you need, what you want and what you can afford. Much of this will be lead by how you use your kitchen, how much you cook and what style of cooking you do. Brands like Sub Zero, Wolf, Miele and Aga are an investment that will add value to your home and provide you with the very best technology in appliances.

Sinks and Taps

The items that you touch and use on a daily basis need to be good quality and able to withstand years of wear and tear. A high-quality tap that will stay the course and sink that is the right size and well made is money well spent. Boiling hot water taps used to be luxury item in a kitchen and the first thing to be removed when on a tight budget. Nowadays virtually every Inglish Design kitchen includes one.

Worktops

Its always a good rule of thumb to invest in good quality work surfaces. There is a vast choice of worktops available from natural stone to quartz and even ceramic. Most of the time your choice will be based on colour, but make sure you understand what the worktops are made of and what warranty they come with. Matching splash backs are a good way to provide a durable surface to the rear of cooking areas that can be wiped clean.

Lighting

Your kitchen is one of the most used spaces in your home, and the lighting can really make a difference to how it feels. Think about adding different types of lighting, for source and for aesthetics. With task lighting under the wall units, and well position ceiling lights aorund your work area, and then overhead or pendant fittings to create atmosphere over islands or dining areas. Try to find a little give in your budget to accommodate great-quality, statement light fittings, such as a beautiful pendant. Plan your lighting as soon as you have decided on the layout of your kitchen, it will be time and money well spent.

Flooring

If you have your heart set on expensive flooring like limestone or engineered wood, then you should follow your instinct, but its always worth hunting around to check out all options. Porcelain tiles provide an extremely hard pre finished durable floor covering. Natural stone can look very beautiful, but must be sealed. Engineered wood is lovely, but can dent and scratch easily and is not great if you are unlucky enough to have a leek. With all flooring, work out the quantity you require and add around 10-15% for wastage. By ordering enough you can be sure that you are working from one batch and wont run out, and having some left over is always a good plan. If you are using a tiler, make sure you discuss with him the layout of the tiles and your expectations in terms of grout colour, spacing between tiles and thresholds and detailing where the floor ends and meets the next room. Finally, try to buy your flooring through your builder if he has a trade account, or negotiate a discount with the supplier.

Electric or piped underfloor heating

Stone floors look great, but can be very cold. If you are extending your home for a large kitchen you must think about heating it. Piped underfloor heating is best, and although undoubtedly easier to do when you are extending your kitchen, it not impossible to retrofit it either. As well as freeing up valuable wall space from radiators, it results in a space that is as cosy in winter as it is in summer, and is less expensive to run than cheaper-to-fit electric heating pads. It is however one to plan from the outset, and get the costs included by your builder, as well as understand how it will be done and what it will involve so you can plan for this.

Plan Plan Plan !

So we have mentioned planning throughout this blog, but it cannot be stressed enough. Projects that start without a clear plan, or deviate from the plan as it progresses end up in stress, mess, over spending and never ending. Do you have a temporary kitchen or utility room which you can use ? Do you have somewhere to store your kitchen goods ? If you are building an extension can this be done with minimum disruption and dust to the rest of the house ? How will you dispose of the old kitchen and appliances ? These are big questions which are often over looked. Building work of any type creates lots of dust, mess and noise – if you are organised for this then things will be less stressful. So plan everything well from timescale, to suppliers, materials to budget, and plan how you will live while the work is being done. This way you will achieve your goals and end up with the very best end result. A new kitchen is a fantastic addition to any home, its worth the money and the effort – and so worth planning well.

If you have a kitchen project coming up or are thinking of a new kitchen for 2018 why not give inglish design a call or arrange to visit out showroom.
